Memphis + New Orleans day 1

17 augustus 2017

Yesterday we went to Memphis, home of graceland and thus Elvis Presley. Today it is 40 years ago he died, so there were a lot of Elvis impersonators walking around in Memphis. I decided to keep it cheap since I way underbudgetted this trip. You pay lots of money everywhere if you want to do anything. So I ended up just walking through Memphis, enjoying the scenery and I read a bit on the banks of the Mississippi river, which I really enjoyed. Since Memphis is quite a rough place to go out at night, we just stayed on the campground. It was freaking hot last night, so I slept outside my sleeping bag, with lots of musquito bites as a consequence, even though I used lots of bug spray. Today we left Tennessee, drove through Mississippi and ended up in New Orleans, Louisiana. Southern Louisiana is just one big swamp. The landscape we drove through was just amazing, I haven't seen anything like that before.

We're not setting up camp tonight, since we're staying in a nice townhouse for the next two days, which is really nice. The house is completely in french colonial style and it's just awesome. Jenny took us for a small tour in the french quarter and we bought a handgrenade, which is a very sweet and strong New Orleans drink, that comes in a grenade shaped bottle. It tasted really nice and  the tour got really funny ;). Before we hit the bars, we all had dinner in a nice restaurant that only served local food. I ate (alli)gator as apetizer and then a mix of all kinds of different foods. It was so good!  The bars were also very nice with awesome jazzy live music. I'm becoming really good at sneeking into bars, it wasn ´t easy here in New Orleans, but I got in :) . Tomorrow we'll spend another day here and I'm really looking forward to it.

Talk to y'all next time
